Bowers Maritime Museum-Main Street-
The Bowers Beach Maritime Museum is getting ready for the 3rd annual revival of Big Thursday, in North Bowers, on August 8th. We will again celebrate the lifting of the annual ban on harvesting oysters, from the Delaware Bay, as they did from the mid 1800’s to the 1920’s. The day’s attractions will include a parade, car show, music, vendors and games for children. This year the Bowers Fire Company will host their 2nd annual car show. Registration is at 7 AM and trophies will be awarded at 12:30. More information is available at www.bowersfire.com. The Saxton United Methodist Church will offer the gospel singing of Jimmy Passwaters, in the state park, at 9 AM. While the Milford Dixieland Band plays, at the museum, the parade will proceed, down Main Street, beginning at 11 AM. All are invited to join the Air Force Honor Guard, Miss Delaware, fire companies, local political candidates, and more, in the approximately 1 mile route through town. After the parade there will be a presentation by the Nanticoke Indians and music by Sandcreek and Celtic Harvest. During the day the museum will be open and docents will look forward to hearing stories about early days in Bowers. There will be food vendors selling hot dogs, BBQ, seafood, kielbasa and ice cream. Sea glass, wood carving, author James Hanna, a professional knife and scissor sharpener, and volunteer organizations will be among the vendors who will fill the park. Children can entertain themselves with water games, a rock wall and bungee jumping. For more information about this rain or shine community effort call Judy at 302-335-1556.
